Muslims (majority) primarily fast for two reasons.
1) First reason Allah order in Quran to fast in the month of Ramadan.
یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ كُتِبَ عَلَیۡكُمُ ٱلصِّیَامُ كَمَا كُتِبَ عَلَى ٱلَّذِینَ مِن قَبۡلِكُمۡ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تَتَّقُونَ
[Surah Al-Baqarah: 183]
2) Second reason is Fast is the Sunnah of Muhammad (PBUH).
